Commercial Security System Maintenance Checklist

March 30, 2026 · SecXpert Resources

A commercial CCTV or access-control system isn't a "set it and forget it" investment. Regular checks help catch small issues before they become downtime or coverage gaps.

Cameras

  • Check for obstructed views (dust, cobwebs, foliage growth, relocated equipment)
  • Confirm image focus and clarity, especially for outdoor cameras exposed to weather
  • Verify night-vision performance during low-light hours

Recording & Storage

  • Confirm the NVR is actively recording on all channels
  • Check available storage capacity and retention period
  • Verify playback works as expected

Network

  • Check PoE switch status and port health
  • Confirm all cameras are online and reporting to the NVR
  • Review network performance if remote viewing is in use

Access Control

  • Test readers at each door for consistent response
  • Confirm door position sensors and request-to-exit devices are functioning
  • Review the credential list and remove access for former staff
  • Check battery backup (if applicable) on controllers and locking hardware

Documentation

  • Keep a record of installed equipment, firmware versions and configuration changes
  • Track any recurring issues to identify hardware that may need replacement
