Access control can sound complex, but the underlying process is straightforward once you break it into its core components.
The Basic Flow
- Credential. A staff member presents a card, fob, PIN or mobile credential.
- Reader. A reader mounted at the door verifies the credential.
- Controller. The access-control panel checks the credential against defined access rules — is this person allowed through this door, at this time?
- Door hardware. If access is granted, the electric strike, maglock or smart lock releases.
- Event log. The system records the event, creating a timestamped record of who accessed which door and when.
What Makes Up the Hardware
- Card, fob, PIN/keypad or mobile-credential readers
- Door controllers that apply access rules
- Electric strikes, magnetic locks or smart locks
- Request-to-exit devices and exit buttons for safe egress
- Door position sensors that report whether a door is open, closed or held
Single-Door vs. Multi-Door vs. Multi-Site
A single-door system manages one entrance. Multi-door systems extend the same logic across an entire facility, and multi-site systems — depending on the platform — can centralize credential management across several locations.
