How to Upgrade an Existing Analog CCTV System to IP Cameras

Many commercial facilities are still running older analog CCTV systems — coaxial cabling, a DVR, and cameras with limited resolution. Upgrading to IP cameras brings better image quality, network flexibility and remote-viewing options, but it's worth understanding what the transition involves.

Start With an Assessment

Before recommending a full replacement, it makes sense to assess what can be retained. In some cases, existing coaxial cabling can be reused with specific hybrid equipment; in others, a full re-cable to CAT6/PoE is the more reliable long-term option.

  • Image quality. IP cameras generally offer significantly higher resolution than legacy analog cameras.
  • Power delivery. IP cameras typically run on PoE, delivering power and data over a single cable, simplifying wiring compared to analog systems.
  • Recording. Analog DVRs are replaced with IP-based NVRs, which offer different storage and management options.
  • Remote viewing. Depending on the equipment and network configuration selected, IP-based systems generally offer more flexible remote-viewing options.
